For 17 years, Frank Miller hosted Armistice Day services atop Mount Rubidoux, raising flags from nations around the world. In 1927, Canada took center stage in a ceremony featuring bagpipes, doves and a tribute to cross-border friendship that endures today.

A Garden's Legacy: Couple's Gift Ensures Grand Arbor Gardens Blooms for Generations
After 30 years of opening their garden to neighbors, artist behind Riverside's painted trees and master gardener gift the property to California Baptist University.
Frank and Lucy Heyming are gifting their five-acre Grand Arbor Gardens to California Baptist University, ensuring the community oasis remains open to the public in perpetuity.
Driving the news: The Heymings, who developed the garden over three decades, sought to preserve it as developers eyed the valuable urban property.
The donation includes a historic 1916 home and creates a $1.2 million endowment for garden maintenance.
Why it matters: Grand Arbor Gardens has become a cherished community space, offering peace and connection to nature for Riverside residents.
The garden features 350 trees of 151 varieties, themed areas, and sculptures created by Frank Heyming.
The impact: CBU gains a unique asset that aligns with other major universities' botanic gardens while preserving a local landmark.
The university commits to maintaining public access, honoring the Heymings' vision for community engagement.
What's next: CBU takes possession in January 2026, with plans for the space still being finalized.
The Heymings are downsizing to a smaller property, leaving behind a living legacy for future generations.

The City of Riverside and Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce have introduced the city's first tool lending library, allowing residents to borrow tools for home improvement projects at three library locations.
Driving the news: The Riverside Tool Library aims to make home improvement accessible to residents who lack budget or storage for specialized tools.
Library card holders can borrow up to two tools for two-week periods at no cost.
Why it matters: The initiative addresses financial strain on homeowners due to high housing costs, potentially putting home improvement projects out of reach.
The service promotes sustainability by reducing the need for single-use tool purchases.
The big picture: The project emerged from the Leadership Riverside Class of 2024, which raised over $12,000 to bring the concept to life.
It exemplifies community collaboration between the Chamber, library system, and local donors.
What they're saying: "Just like borrowing books, borrowing tools will build skills, confidence, and community," says Library Director Erin Christmas.
What's next: Residents interested in donating tools or funds can contact any Riverside Public Library location.
The tool catalog and borrowing information is available at riversideca.gov.
