Hello Riverside, and Happy Friday!
I’m the son of two teachers. My wife is a teacher. I don’t work in a profession that takes the summer off, but summer has always been a big deal. It’s a spot on the horizon, and May is always the time when that spot starts to come into focus. The annual promised season draws closer, and we embrace the quickening pace of the last few weeks of school, knowing that the final bell on the final day finally gives us a reprieve for the summer.
As much as I love the road trips, the impromptu beach runs and having the wife and kids around during the day, I also appreciate the abundance of activity that comes with wrapping up a school year. Check out our May edition of the Raincross Rundown for a few of the highlights. It’s not comprehensive, and you can find plenty more on the calendar.
This weekend is the Show and Go downtown. While you’re there, check out what the kids left on Main Street near Ninth for Riverside Unified School District’s annual Chalk Day.

HOUSING
Riverside Weighs $35 Million Conversion of Hotel into Permanent Supportive Housing
City could secure state HomeKey Plus funding to transform struggling hotel, though newly opened businesses express concerns about timing.

The Housing and Homelessness Committee in Riverside unanimously approved a resolution to apply for state funds to transform the Quality Inn into permanent supportive housing. The project aims to create 114 affordable studio apartments for low-income households and individuals experiencing homelessness.
Driving the news: The city is seeking up to $35 million in HomeKey Plus funds to convert the hotel at 1590 University Avenue into much-needed affordable housing units.
- The project would provide 94 units for households earning at or below 30% of area median income and 20 units for those at or below 50%.
Why it matters: Riverside currently has 219 individuals awaiting permanent supportive housing, with 83 of them aged 55 or older.
- City Manager Mike Futrell emphasized the project's role in filling a crucial gap in the housing continuum for unhoused residents.
The details: The $31.7 million project includes on-site case managers, 24-hour security, and property management staff living on the premises.
- Tenants would sign 12-month leases and pay rent, potentially subsidized through Section 8 vouchers.
Yes, but: Some local business owners expressed opposition, citing concerns about the project's impact on recent developments in the area.
What's next: The resolution will advance to the full City Council for consideration, with applications for HomeKey Plus funding due by May 30.

COMMUNITY
Cinco De Mayo Guide
Find a fiesta and enjoy the food, music, and community of Cinco de Mayo.

Cinco de Mayo may not be a big deal in Mexico, and it may have spurious origins in the United States. What is certain is that it has become a day to celebrate Mexican American culture. If you live in Southern California, the contributions to our culture are obvious — the food, music and love of community all make for a great foundation for celebration.
