Gram Worthy Picks
A prompt to encourage your practice of creativity this week from Riversider and local author Larry Burns.
Each week, we will introduce a new neighbor. This is not a who's who list. These are regular Riversiders doing exceptional things.
Sharon Mateja is a dedicated community leader, promoter of the arts, and policy advocate in Riverside. As the Chairperson of Residents for Responsible Representation, a group she founded 18 years ago, Sharon has been instrumental in organizing debates, forums, and discussions that keep her community informed and engaged. She also serves as Vice-Chair of Neighbor’s Better Together, a community leaders group focused on improving Riversider’s quality of life.
Sharon’s passion for the arts is evident in her past service as a board member of the Riverside Philharmonic Symphony and her work with Alvord Unified School District to introduce classical music to students. She also promotes community involvement in La Sierra University’s music programs. In addition to her policy and advocacy work, Sharon volunteers as a dentist at “Smile Unto Him,” a non-profit clinic serving low-income residents.
What does Riverside mean to you? Riverside is my home. I came here as a young bride, raised my family, got an education, became a licensed dentist, and worked to make Riverside the best it could be. Riverside has a colorful, rich, and historical background, which I want to protect.
What is your favorite restaurant outside of Downtown or Magnolia Center? OK Sushi is the place to be with friends, laughter, and great sushi. It is like “Cheers.” You walk in, and the staff knows you and welcomes you like the most important guest for the evening.
What is the most beautiful building in Riverside? How can I name one?????? Our restored courthouse, the Heritage House, and the First Congregational Church are a few of the many.
What is your favorite Riverside small business? The Backstreet
What is your favorite Riverside non-profit organization? I must mention “Smile Unto Him” based on their commitment to serve unselfishly and improve the quality of the lives they serve.
What is your go-to sandwich in town? The Backstreet!
What is your idea of a perfect weekend day in Riverside? An early, brisk walk up Mt. Rubidoux, enjoying the panorama both on the walk up and down. Strolling downtown and inhaling the fragrances from the restaurants that waft through the air while deciding where to stop for a hot latte and breakfast—stopping at Fairmont Park, finding an unoccupied bench, and reflecting on... life.
What is your favorite spot for a date night? Ahhhhhh, the Mission Inn Restaurant, on the patio, by the fountain, looking up at the clock tower.
Do you call it the Galleria or Tyler Mall? Tyler Mall... then, now, and forever :)
What is one place in Riverside you would bring back if you could? I want our carousel returned to Fairmont Park. Is anyone listening who can accomplish this?
