Riverside Polytechnic High School graduate Aidan Christopher finished 13th in his age group at the 2026 World Triathlon Championship Finals in Pontevedra, Spain, on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Christopher, 18, raced in the 18 to 19 open age group category of the Standard Distance race and crossed the finish line in 3 hours, 6 minutes and 18 seconds. He graduated from Poly this year and competed against amateur athletes from around the world.

The Standard Distance race, also known as the Olympic distance, combines a 1.5-kilometer (0.93-mile) swim, a 40-kilometer (24.8-mile) bike ride and a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) run, for a total of 51.5 kilometers, or about 32 miles.

About 5,400 athletes from 100 countries took part in the championships, according to a Facebook post from the Spanish Triathlon Federation. Team USA sent 45 athletes to the elite, elite para, under-23 and junior world title races, along with more than 600 amateur athletes in the age group events. Christopher competed as part of the age group team.

The week began with opening ceremonies on Wednesday, Sept. 23, when athletes paraded through the streets of Pontevedra. Delegations converged on the city from five directions, a design meant to resemble a tree and represent one human race with many branches.

Christopher's path to the world stage started close to home. He won his age group at the Mission Bay Triathlon in San Diego on Oct. 13, 2024, which qualified him for nationals. At the 2025 USA Triathlon National Championships in Milwaukee on Aug. 9, 2025, he placed in the top 20, earning a spot at worlds.

He has also raced locally. Christopher won the Riverside Citrus Classic on Oct. 18, 2025, where friend Deacon Cordes finished third. At the Tinman reverse triathlon on April 27, 2024, he placed second behind his brother, Anselm. He has also competed in Cal Tri Ventura, the Mission Inn Foundation Run, the Citrus Heritage Run and the Hometown Heroes Honor Run.

At Poly, Christopher swam for coach Grishom and ran cross country for coach Orr, who has since retired. He is now a freshman at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, majoring in communication sciences and disorders, with plans to study audiology.

Samuel Powers of Higher Powers Construction sponsored Christopher's race.
