It’s February, which means it’s also Black History Month. This month – and every month – we celebrate the culture and history of Black and African American excellence and achievements.
We rounded up a list of family-friendly events happening across the city that celebrate and honor the Black community in Riverside and beyond.
Sunday, Feb. 6
Word Circus: Celebrating Black History Month with Spoken Word
The Inlandia Institute invites you to join poets Romaine Washington and Eric DeVaughnn for an evening of spoken word that celebrates language and beauty of poetry. Embarking on the new Arts Walk series, “Word Circus,” the night will include writing and reading sessions, along with an open mic session.
The event is from 7–8:30 p.m. and will be held on the first floor of the Riverside Public Library. This event is free and open to the public. Learn more at inlandiainstitute.org.
Saturday, Feb. 12
Black History Expo & Parade
Celebrate Black history and culture at the annual expo and parade presented with the Adrian Dell and Carmen Roberts Foundation. The parade will include live entertainment, including a car show and band performances as well as appearances from sports teams, dance teams, and Riverside government officials. Attendees can select from an array of more than 40 food and merchandise vendors that will be present.
The event will start at 10 a.m. in Downtown Riverside on Main Street at City Hall and will wrap up at 5 p.m. This event is free.
Saturday, Feb. 19
Annual Black History Celebration
This annual luncheon brings together the local senior citizen community to celebrate the diversity and culture of African Americans. Attendees are encouraged to participate wearing their favorite traditional African attire.
The event is from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Janet Goeske Foundation & Senior Center on Sierra Street.
Saturday, Feb. 26
Black History Month Event and Pop-up Market
Support small Black businesses and join this community and networking market for an afternoon of cultural celebration with live gospel music. The event will include a step team performance contest, a hair show contest and a fashion show. Approximately 100 food and merchant vendors will also be present.
The event is from 2–8 p.m. at the Wind of Spirit Worship Center located on Streeter Avenue.
