Opinion: A Familiar Glow and New Traditions Await at Festival of Lights

From the Switch-On Ceremony with Gavin DeGraw to a new illuminated maze at White Park, there is plenty to look forward to Downtown this season.

Can you believe it? November is already here, and the holiday season is right around the corner! Before we know it, families across Riverside will be gathering with loved ones, enjoying some well-deserved rest and relaxation and experiencing the holiday magic brought to life by the Festival of Lights. There is something special about seeing the Mission Inn illuminated, our Downtown streets filled with holiday cheer and families coming together to celebrate the season

With the recent transition of ownership of the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa to the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation, I know many have wondered what the future holds for this beloved celebration. I am happy to share that the Festival of Lights will continue to shine bright! This year, we can look forward to new attractions and experiences that bring fresh excitement to the festivities while preserving the magic that has made this tradition so special.

The celebration kicks off on Saturday, November 21, at 5 p.m. with the annual Switch-On Ceremony, featuring singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw. And starting on Friday, November 27, Downtown will be filled with even more holiday cheer. Along Main Street, the Artisans Collective will showcase 50 local artists and makers, offering unique gifts and an opportunity to support our creative community. You can also enjoy performances on the Benjamin Franklin Stage, celebrating the incredible talent we have right here in Riverside.

And this year, the Riverside Arts Council and the city of Riverside are partnering to introduce an exciting new addition to the celebration: Candy Land at White Park. This festive experience will feature an illuminated holiday maze, light installations by local artists, a Snowball Arena, a Holiday Games Village and much more. Candy Land is a ticketed experience, and you can find additional information at www.riversideartscouncil.com.

The Riverside Arts Council is also bringing a holiday twist to another favorite Downtown tradition with Merry Artswalk on December 3 and December 17. These special evenings will offer even more opportunities to explore local art, shop with local artists, and experience the festive atmosphere of our Downtown Arts and Culture District.

While the lights and attractions are certainly something to celebrate, what makes the Festival of Lights truly memorable is how it brings our community together. Beyond that, it brings our community to the rest of the world when visitors join us for this annual celebration. The holiday season is an opportunity to slow down, appreciate those around us and celebrate the community we are fortunate to be part of.

I look forward to seeing you Downtown, and from my family to yours, I wish you a joyful holiday season!
