Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center staff sheltered in place until after midnight as the Bain Fire threatened the facility, monitoring conditions and standing by before the fire began to be contained and winds died down. The fire remains active.
"Yesterday's fire activity served as an important reminder of how quickly conditions can change in our region during fire season," said Katie Stout, director of operations. "While Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center was fortunate not to be severely impacted, our team remained on alert throughout the day, monitoring conditions closely and reviewing emergency preparedness plans to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the animals in our care."
The center drew community support through the night. Two community members showed up with pizza and drinks for onsite staff, and DCH Subaru of Riverside arrived to stand watch and help however needed.
"To everyone who offered trailers, crates, transportation, space, supplies, encouragement, and prayers, we are deeply grateful," the center said in a social media post. "Last night was a reminder of just how incredible this community is and how fiercely you show up for animals in need."
Stout also recognized those battling the blaze. "We want to recognize and thank the firefighters, first responders, and emergency personnel working tirelessly throughout the region to protect both people and pets during these challenging conditions."
Riversiders can support the center by fostering a pet or volunteering. Programs like Riverside Rovers and foster care create space and resources for animals during fire season, and foster participants may be called upon to help evacuate pets from the center.
The center is also encouraging community members to verify information through official agency channels and trusted local sources before sharing or acting on it, as false information during emergencies can delay aid.
