The City Council marked National Nonprofit Day at its Aug. 25 meeting, proclaiming Aug. 17 as an annual day honoring Riverside nonprofits and presenting a certificate to the Lighthouse of Hope Foundation.
Councilmember Sean Mill read the proclamation, saying the mayor's office asked each councilmember to choose a nonprofit to honor this year. He chose Lighthouse of Hope Foundation, located at Jackson Street and California Avenue in Ward 5. "They just do amazing, amazing work in the community helping those in need," Mill said. "It's heartwarming to see the work that you guys do."
According to the proclamation, National Nonprofit Day recognizes nonprofit staff, volunteers and advocates and encourages residents to support organizations through volunteering, donating or sharing their mission.
Lighthouse of Hope Foundation also received a certificate of recognition from the office of Assemblymember Leticia Castillo on behalf of the California State Assembly.
Donna Sautia, founder and CEO of Lighthouse of Hope, said the organization provides food, clothing, shoes, diapers and other necessities to residents through pop-up distributions across the city. "We're all over the city doing things late nights, early mornings, whatever we can do to continue to make sure that the community knows that we're there for them," Sautia said.
In a Facebook post after the meeting, the foundation thanked the city, saying the honor "reflects our CEO's heart, leadership, and unwavering commitment to helping families and individuals throughout Riverside and beyond."
