Riverside County Transportation Commission voted Wednsday, March 8 to terminate expansion plans for Riverside’s Downtown Metrolink station.

The project was planned to improved commuter access to the railways and avoid delays due to increasing freight train activity. The expansion would have brought new tracks, a new platform, and a new parking lot on the East side of the station and was funded through the Southern California Optimized Rail Expansion (SCORE) program intended to update the entire Metrolink system before the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Community leaders in Eastside and the Old Riverside Foundation (ORF) have been advocating against the project since early 2021 due to impact on the FMC Building for track and platform expansion. The building currently sites just feet from the station’s eastern most tracks.

“Demolition of this recognized landmark building sets a dangerous precedent far beyond this project” said the ORF in their letter to the Commission.
