The University of California, Riverside, announced Wednesday that S. Jack Hu, currently provost at the University of Georgia, will become the campus’s 10th chancellor on July 15.

For Hu, the move represents a shift from Athens, Georgia, a college town of 130,000 where UGA dominates the cultural and economic landscape, to Riverside, a diverse city of 330,000 with its own thriving identity beyond the university. While UCR may have a smaller profile in the city compared to UGA’s presence in Athens, the timing couldn’t be better for both the university and the region.

UCR’s recent admission to the prestigious Association of American Universities in 2023 signals its emergence as a major research institution. His track record—overseeing a $1.5 billion research enterprise at the University of Michigan and growing UGA’s research funding to more than $620 million—positions him well to accelerate UCR’s upward trajectory.

His engineering background and focus on translating research into real-world products could prove especially valuable for the Inland Empire’s manufacturing and logistics sectors. At UGA, Hu led initiatives in electric mobility and advanced manufacturing while building partnerships between the university and local communities.

“I am honored to join this outstanding university whose mission is to transform lives through discovery, dissemination, and application of knowledge,” Hu said in a statement. “UC Riverside has immense potential ahead that I believe will put the campus at the forefront of shaping the future of higher education.”

The appointment comes as UCR seeks to expand its impact as an economic engine for the region while maintaining its distinction as one of the nation’s most diverse research universities. Under retiring Chancellor Kim Wilcox, UCR added schools of medicine and public policy and increased enrollment by 25%.

Hu, who holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, brings nearly 40 years of experience in higher education to Riverside.
