Thousands of UC Riverside students arrived in town this week as the 2022-23 school year began. After a couple of years limited by COVID restrictions, the campus admitted a record number of freshmen students with a total 37,262 – a 6.95% increase.

UCR admitted the most first-year students as well as the most California residents — 30,640 — to its freshman class of all the nine UC campuses. However, it is not anticipated to be a record attendance year because transfer numbers from community colleges are down.

Students enjoyed Welcome Week activities with concerts, athletic and information events hosted by numerous campus partners and nearly 8, 500 students moved into campus housing.

But today, students will get busy as classes begin.

UC Riverside was recently recognized as the No. 1 public university in the nation for social mobility which considers the degree to which a university elevates its low-income graduates to a higher standard of living.
