The Janet Goeske Foundation in Riverside is set to unveil California's first AT&T Connected Learning Center designed specifically for older adults. The launch event on Thursday marks a significant step in bridging the digital divide for seniors.
Driving the news: AT&T has invested $50,000 and provided technology resources, including 19 desktop computers and 100 laptops, to create a dedicated digital learning space at the 25,000-square-foot facility.
The center aims to address the fact that 25% of seniors have never used the internet.
Why it matters: The Riverside location is part of AT&T's national initiative to establish 100 Connected Learning Centers across the country by 2027, but it's the first to focus exclusively on older adults.
The launch coincides with National Senior Citizens Day and will feature remarks from local and regional officials.
The big picture: This initiative is part of a broader transformation at the Janet Goeske Foundation, which now serves 100,000 annual visitors through various programs.
Future plans include a $4.5 million expansion and the introduction of advanced technologies like 3D printing and robotics.
What's next: The foundation plans to expand its model regionally through a "senior tour" to share resources across Riverside County and the Inland Empire.
The Riverside Community Players launches its 101st season on August 29, 2025, with Agatha Christie's "Towards Zero" directed by Christopher Diehl, continuing the legacy of one of America's oldest community theatres at their theater-in-the-round venue on Fourteenth Street.
