Wednesday Gazette: September 30, 2026

Hello Riverside, and Happy Wednesday! Thank you to everyone who wrote in with their favorite coffee spots for National Coffee Day. One reader's go-to for coffee, breakfast and meeting up with people is Back to the Grind, while another simply said "Arcade!!!!" Mundial Coffee off Spruce Street got love for its coffee, atmosphere and people, and Mikey G's earned a vote for its monthly cold foams. And one reader said their go-to, the Copper Goat on Main Street, is less about the coffee and more about the great people they meet and talk to there. Their invitation: come on down and let's all talk to each other.

Around the newsroom, Cafe Oro Dos Aztecas on Main Street in Downtown is a favorite. The Spear latte is delicious hot or cold, the vibe is all community, and the owner and staff are warm and welcoming. Another Gazette coffee lover heads to Arcade for its in-house roasting and seasonal menu, Condron for its 6 a.m. open and an always perfect espresso and tonic, and Mikey G's when what you're really after is coffee and a bagel. On the west side of town, Twee is a solid pick with a strong coffee program and a front patio made for warm-weather coffee chats. And one more of us is fresh off a visit to Stray Dogs, where the spacious, peaceful atmosphere felt almost like a spa and the pumpkin cheesecake cold foam latte made for the perfect fall drink. Guess you can tell we take our coffee seriously around here. ;)

Here's what else is happening around town:

HISTORY

A History of Baseball in Riverside

The Riverside Historical Society's 2026 Special Publication traces the city's baseball history back to the 1870s, from Evans Park to the RBI tournament.

In the spring of 2025, the Riverside Historical Society committed to dedicating our 2026 Special Publication to a sports topic. Shortly thereafter, the society refined the topic to focus on the history of baseball in Riverside.

In our early research meetings, we were warned by people like Gerald Hurley and John Corona of the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame and former UCR baseball coach Doug Smith that the topic was so vast, it would be a challenge to comprehensively cover the history of baseball in Riverside.

Fifteen months and 838 pages later, they were correct. With that, we changed the title from "The History of Baseball in Riverside" to "A History of Baseball in Riverside." Riverside's baseball history goes back to the 1870s, and it is very impressive.

CBU women's soccer beat UCR 2-0 in the schools' first conference meeting, opening a crosstown points race through spring.

Why it matters: CBU joined the Big West on July 1, so crosstown games now count in the standings that set the conference tournament field. The tournament champion earns an automatic NCAA bid.

Driving the news: The Lancers scored twice in six minutes Saturday in 100-degree heat at UCR Soccer Stadium.

  • Bella D'Amico scored in the 15th minute and Anja Jestrovic followed, both set up by Jessica Ramirez.
  • Rebecca Winton, in goal for the injured Mikayla O'Brien, blocked a late UCR penalty kick. A Highlander header at the horn didn't count.

The big picture: The Showdown runs 14 events through spring. Each result earns points toward a new championship trophy.

  • Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson, a Highlander whose office launched the Showdown, said at halftime: "The mayor's office is team Riverside."

By the numbers: CBU is 5-1-1 all-time against UCR after its third straight win.

What's next: The men's teams meet Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at CBU.
