I started out in 1952 as a humble neighborhood market on a street named for a British admiral. Fifteen years later, a young couple traded grocery shelves for sandwich counters, and turned my old driveway into a courtyard where big trees now shade decades' worth of quirky, hand-picked decor. Regulars just call me by one word — the same word you'd use for an alley, a shortcut, or anywhere a little off the beaten path.

What a Teenage Racecar Driver Taught Me About My Daughter's Future
A rising karting star from Riverside is teaching parents like me what success outside the usual sports can look like.
When my daughter was born, I immediately thought of sports she could play. I'd tell my wife made-up stories of her representing the U.S. at the World Cup. I'd make up stories of her success as a left-hand pitcher in the recently created professional women's baseball league. Sometimes the dream would reach winning a gold medal as the starting point guard for Team USA.
The fantasies revolved around a popular sport in the U.S. and success outside the sports culture in the States never crossed my mind, until I read about Truly Adams.
For teenagers in America, four of the top five most popular sports involve a ball. Whether it's a basketball, a football, a soccer ball or a baseball, there's some sort of round sphere involved in the game.
Adams isn't your average American teenager. His weapon of choice is a car, and his race track has made him a two-time World Karting Champion — the first American to reach the finals and earn a podium finish in France's FEED Racing Volant F4 program.
He tried to play ball like the average teenager. Adams played soccer. He dribbled the ball up the court in basketball. He even picked up a racket a few times on the tennis court. But nothing overtook the infatuation he had developed for racing.

Chances Are
A prompt to encourage your practice of creativity this week from Riversider and local author Larry Burns.
This week let’s welcome the element of chance onto the stage. My first memorable encounters with chance came from board games. In Monopoly, drawing a Chance card usually brings something advantageous, but it could also bring financial disaster. Will I advance to the nearest railroad, head directly to jail or discover that every property has been reassessed? No different than chance in real life, I cannot predict what’s coming, but I will be ready when it arrives.
Chance sometimes gets confused with giving up control. Welcoming it doesn’t mean handing over the keys and telling fate to drive. It means noticing that accidents, coincidences, unexpected materials and unplanned encounters have always helped nudge us onto paths we might not have selected for ourselves.
Chance is already an important collaborator in my outdoor assemblage work. Most of those exhibits are made from things I find after I arrive. I may bring an idea, but the location supplies the materials. Weather factors in too. Wind brings in the greatest element of chance, removing or adding things after I thought I was finished. Chance becomes another collaborator. It doesn’t get final approval, but it does get a vote.
