Lemonade Stand Brings Community Together

Young entrepreneur's Disney dream shows local impact of community action.

Meliia’s lemonade stand on Victoria Avenue draws more than thirsty customers. Even during last week’s triple-digit temperatures, the 9-year-old Ukrainian refugee kept her stand open because she knew Riversiders were counting on her being there. Her Disney dream has become a community rallying point.

“Somebody gave me a $50 gift card for Disneyland, and I got a popcorn bucket, a water bottle and a keychain,” Meliia said.

She was surprised to learn American children could run their own businesses. Now she has mastered the concept, funding her Disney dreams through lemonade sales while creating an estimated 167 handmade dragons inspired by “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Wings of Fire.”

What started as one child’s entrepreneurial effort has become something larger. Customers do more than buy lemonade. They bring gifts, offer encouragement and invest in her dream.

Meliia embodies qualities Riversiders value. She did not wait for help. She created opportunity. Her work ethic and determination reflect what the community celebrates.

A GoFundMe campaign organized by resident Mike Gardner aims to send Meliia’s family to Disneyland with hotel, meals and transportation covered. Residents can contribute at gofundme.com.

Global conflicts can feel distant and unchangeable. Meliia’s story offers something different: immediate, meaningful impact. The community cannot stop the war that displaced her family, but residents can ensure one hardworking 9-year-old meets Mickey Mouse.

Wars and politics dominating headlines can feel overwhelming. But change happens in smaller ways too. It happens one lemonade cup at a time, one gift card at a time, one neighbor deciding that a child’s dream matters.
