The Human Migration Institute will host its annual International Women's Day gathering Sunday, March 8 from noon to 2 p.m. at Fairmount Park picnic shelter No. 1.

The free, family-friendly event, themed "Create. Connect. Celebrate.", will feature hands-on creative stations including bouquet making, embroidery, mini canvas painting, strength bracelet making and henna art, along with a Kids' Creativity Zone and an appreciation open mic.

HMI Communications Director Allison Severns said the event reflects the organization's founding.

"Women have shaped HMI from the very beginning," Severns said. "When we were founded in 2015, local educator women stepped up to teach small, grassroots ESL classes for Syrian refugee women arriving in Riverside during the refugee crisis. That spirit of women supporting women became the foundation of our organization, and it continues today."

Severns said 83% of HMI's team are women.

The event is designed to bring refugee newcomer families and longtime residents together in shared public space.

"For us, Women's Day is about connection and belonging — making sure refugee women feel seen and valued within the broader community," Severns said.

Out of respect for attendees observing Ramadan, no snacks will be provided, though water will be available. The RSVP deadline is March 5.
