Decision clears environmental hurdle for Riverside Alive project after seven-year process.
City collects trees curbside through Jan. 24, plus a handy refresher on what goes in which bin.
Christmas trees will be collected curbside through Jan. 24 as part of regular trash pickup, the City announced.
Residents should remove stands, ornaments and decorations before disposal. Trees should be cut into 4-foot sections and placed in green containers or on the curb next to them. Container lids must close fully for collection.
Flocked trees are not green waste and should be cut into 4-foot sections for brown or gray trash containers.
While we're talking about waste bins, here's a refresher on what goes where in Riverside's three-bin system:
Blue bins accept plastics numbered 1-7, empty food cartons, glass bottles and jars, empty aluminum and tin cans, and clean paper including cardboard, envelopes, junk mail, magazines, newspaper and wrapping paper.
Batteries, bubble wrap, carpet, ceramic dishes, clothing, diapers, electronics, fluorescent bulbs, hoses, mirrors, pet food bags, pet waste, plastic toys, stuffed animals and window glass do not belong in blue bins.
Green bins accept bagged food scraps including fruits, vegetables, meats, seafood, bread, dairy and spoiled food. Food-soiled paper also goes in green bins.
Yard waste including flowers, grass clippings, leaves, palm fronds, small branches under 4 feet, twigs that do not bundle, untreated wood and weeds is accepted.
Batteries, cactus, concrete, dirt, electronics, flammables, glass, hazardous waste, metal, oil, pet waste, plastic and rocks are prohibited.
Brown or gray bins accept clothing, diapers, dishware, pet waste, plastic bags, plastic toys, plastic utensils, shrink wrap, straws, window glass and wipes.
Batteries, electronics, flammables, fluorescent bulbs, hazardous waste, hot ashes, infectious waste, machinery, oil, organics, paint, pesticides, sharps and tires are prohibited.
Household hazardous waste includes antifreeze, automobile parts, auto and household batteries, bleach, electronic waste, garden chemicals, ink jet cartridges, light bulbs and tubes, medications, needles and sharps, paint, pool chlorine, tires and used oil.

Fats, oils and grease should never be poured down drains. During cooking, wipe pans with paper towels and place with food scraps in green bins. Cooled, solidified grease from regular cooking can be added to bagged food waste.
