HOUSING

Housing Panel Backs Home for Pregnant Teens, Limits on Inherited Mobile Home Rent Hikes

Amari's Place would serve pregnant and parenting teens in Ward 2, while proposed rent changes target inherited mobile homes and park improvement charges.

Pregnant and parenting teens facing homelessness could get a Ward 2 home with round-the-clock support.

Why it matters: The program would pair housing with prenatal care, schooling and parenting help, and city residents would get first priority. Mobile home residents could also gain protection from rent hikes on inherited homes.

Driving the news: The Housing and Homelessness Committee sent both proposals to the City Council on Sept. 28.

  • The committee conceptually approved Leap for Joy Foundation's request for $1.283 million in state homeless grant funding to buy and renovate 775 Huston St.

How it would work: Amari's Place would offer 24-hour supervision, prenatal and postpartum care, and help finishing high school or finding work.

  • The grant would place a 20-year covenant restricting the property's use.

Neighbors weigh in: At a Sept. 10 meeting, 14 University Neighborhood residents asked about safety, supervision and bilingual services. They also voiced encouragement for the resource.

  • The foundation committed to English and Spanish services, monthly neighborhood association meetings and an open house after renovations.

Mobile home rules: The committee backed limits on space-rent hikes when a mobile home changes hands, including through inheritance.

  • Members also want clearer lines between capital improvements and routine maintenance charges. Park representatives opposed new limits, citing rising costs.

What's next: The mobile home changes could reach the council in November. Exact ordinance language and a meeting date are still to come.

Jeff Soto's print show opens Thursday, pairing his sabbatical work with prints by more than 20 Riverside City College artists.

Why it matters: The 6 to 9 p.m. reception falls on ArtsWalk night, when The Cheech and the Riverside Art Museum offer free admission. The gallery, inside Urge Palette Art Supplies, sits on the way to The Cheech.

Driving the news: Soto, an associate professor of art and department co-chair at the college, spent a spring sabbatical studying printmaking.

  • He visited museums and artists' studios, experiences he plans to bring "back to the classroom this fall," he said.

What's on view: Invited artists made etchings, linocuts and other prints with no required theme.

  • Nearly all were made on Soto's Blick 999 Model II in his Riverside studio.
  • Contributors are current and former students he taught and fellow art faculty, including his daughter, Shannon Soto.

The backstory: Soto studied at Riverside Community College and ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena. His work has shown from Los Angeles to Paris.

What's next: "Rare Woods" runs through Oct. 31 at Pain Sugar Gallery, 3635 Ninth St.

  • Hours: noon to 7 p.m. weekdays, noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Closed Sunday.

The Hard Way Up: Pink on Parade Climbs Mt. Rubidoux for a 15th Year

Riverside's breast cancer awareness walk climbs Oct. 24 with a $75,000 goal and a route its survivors chose.

When the committee behind Pink on Parade first mapped its 5K to the top of Mt. Rubidoux, there was more than one way up the mountain. They took the hard one. That committee was made up of clients of The Pink Ribbon Place, Riverside residents who had faced cancer themselves, and they wanted the climb to carry the weight of what they had been through.

On Saturday, Oct. 24, Riverside will make that climb again. The 15th annual Pink on Parade steps off from Ryan Bonaminio Park at 5000 Tequesquite Ave., with registration opening at 7:30 a.m. and the mountain route starting at 9 a.m. Walkers who would rather not take on Mt. Rubidoux can join a 1.7K Family Fun Walk that loops the park.
