I Hear Footprints
A prompt to encourage your practice of creativity this week from Riversider and local author Larry Burns.
Monday Gazette: May 26, 2025
Hello Riverside, and Happy Monday! Memorial Day is serious but not somber. We gather to remember, but not to mourn. We honor those who served and sacrificed with our celebration. Our gatherings in private and public spaces are civic ceremonies, declaring our freedom—unafraid. We honor those who died not with weeping, but with recognition and respect for those who are gone, and joy in those around us. It's a day that holds both weight and lightness—serious in its purpose, celebratory in its expression. Enjoy your family and friends this Memorial Day.
City Council does not meet this week; the schedule of other public meetings is light this Memorial Day week.
Welcome to our weekly digest on public meetings and agenda items worthy of your attention in the next week. This guide is part of our mission to provide everyday Riversiders like you with the information to speak up on the issues you care about.
The Museum of Riverside Board meets on Wednesday, May 28, at 3 p.m. (agenda) for an update on the museum's $2.7 million budget and renovation projects, programming, and operational challenges, including the upcoming two-year main museum construction period.
The Community Police Review Commission meets on Wednesday, May 28, at 5:30 p.m. (agenda) to review 2024 police department data collected under California’s Racial and Identity Profiling Act. The data shows potential disparities in traffic stops, particularly for Black residents—who were stopped at more than twice their census population rate—and males, who represented 72–75% of all stops despite making up roughly half the population.

Amid heirloom roses and citrus trees, Riverside’s Heritage House invites visitors to slow down, explore the gardens, and help bring local history to life as a docent.
Operated by the Museum of Riverside, Heritage House graces one of Riverside’s major arteries: Magnolia Avenue. We welcome you to visit the house and slow down to literally smell the roses — the heirloom roses! Just steps away from the hustle and bustle of Magnolia Avenue, the gardens of Heritage House showcase mature trees, a butterfly and hummingbird garden, and, of course, plenty of Washington navel orange trees.
You may have taken a tour of the house, but have you taken the time to enjoy the gardens? Sit under the camphor trees and imagine a time when the only vehicles that traveled down Magnolia were horse-drawn carriages, wagons, and the trolley conveying people to and from Downtown Riverside and Arlington. While there, you may be privy to a hawk’s call, the playful scamper of squirrels, or the flitting of hummingbirds and butterflies.
