Historic Mission Inn Organ Returns to Life with Silent Film Classic

Riverside's Mission Inn will unveil its newly restored 1909 Kimball pipe organ on Oct. 25, accompanying a screening of the 1922 silent film "Nosferatu" in the Grand Parisian Ballroom.

Driving the news: The 2,800-pipe organ, one of America's last surviving hotel pipe organs, will make its public debut following extensive restoration work.

  • Organist William Zeitler will perform Bach's Toccata in D minor before improvising a live score for the film.

Why it matters: The event revives a lost art form from cinema's early era, showcasing the creative responsibility organists once held in shaping the moviegoing experience.

  • Silent films rarely came with official scores, leaving organists to create appropriate musical atmospheres with minimal direction.

The details: Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door, with costumes encouraged for the Halloween-season event.

  • The screening begins at 1 p.m., with doors opening at noon.

What's next: The Friends of the Mission Inn hope this event will lead to more public access to the ballroom and increased use of the historic organ.

D'Elia's Grinders in Riverside is marking its 70th anniversary with a special celebration featuring discounted sandwiches and a limited-time menu at its original University Avenue location.

Driving the news: The family-owned restaurant will offer whole cold grinders for 65 cents each on Saturday, with customers limited to two discounted sandwiches per person.

  • The anniversary menu includes 11 classic grinder varieties prepared with the original recipe.

Why it matters: D'Elia's longevity is a rarity in the restaurant industry, where many small businesses struggle to survive beyond two decades.

  • The celebration highlights the restaurant's ability to maintain its Connecticut-style grinder tradition despite evolving local tastes and increased competition.

The big picture: Founded in 1955, D'Elia's has become a Riverside institution, earning recognition as a "Real Riversider" rite of passage among longtime residents.

  • Now operated by third-generation family members, the restaurant continues to use its original crusty bread recipe, baked in-house daily.

What's next: The family hopes to reach the century mark with continued community support, aiming to operate for another 30 years.
