Marvin and Ana Sandoval run Vixen and Beard in Midtown Riverside. It's a barbershop and men's general store in one space — what Marvin calls a "third space" where men can get a haircut, shop and hang around.
"We're not young. The older guy's not shopping at Tilly's. I'm not shopping at Macy's. Where else do we go?" Marvin explains. "We want to look good, we have the money to spend."
Vixen and Beard focuses on higher-end, high-quality men’s brands. The shop fills that gap. They sell Pendleton shirts — the only place in Riverside that carries them — plus watches, sunglasses, belts and grooming products. Marvin's film photography hangs on the walls. You can browse the retail side while waiting for a haircut or come in just to shop.
"Where are you going to find a space where you have this variety... and a full-on barbershop in the same space?" Marvin asks.
He knows his target customer because he is one. "Most Riverside guys are hard-working... blue-collar guys. And they need a place. That's what we are."
The combination works well for gift shopping. Women come in looking for something for their husbands, fathers or brothers, and the curated selection makes it simple. Everything in the shop fits together — from the Pendleton shirts to the grooming products to the barber services.
It's a straightforward concept that works: quality men's goods and barber services under one roof at Magnolia and Beatty in Midtown Riverside. No department store wandering, no teen surf shop aesthetic. Just a place designed for men who know what they want.
