South Coast AQMD offers up to 75% savings on electric lawn tools in trade for old gas-powered equipment.
As summer gets underway and lawn mowing season picks up, that old gas-powered mower or trimmer sitting in your garage could be worth something. The South Coast Air Quality Management District is offering residents the chance to trade up to three pieces of old gas equipment for new electric versions at up to 75% off retail prices.
Registration and payment are open now at agza.net/exchanges and must be completed by June 26th for the June 28th exchange event at Riverside City College. This marks the first such event in Riverside County, with more planned across the region.
The environmental impact is significant. Using a gas-powered lawn mower for one hour produces as much air pollution as driving a car from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Since 2017, the program has reduced emissions by approximately 1.4 tons of volatile organic compounds and 0.28 tons of nitrogen oxides annually.
Available equipment includes push and self-propelled mowers, plus handheld tools like blowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, brush cutters, and chainsaws. All come with battery and charger included.
Beyond cleaner air, electric equipment offers practical benefits: no oil changes, no gas refills, quieter operation, and push-button starting.
More information: The exchange takes place Saturday, June 28th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Riverside City College, Parking Lot E, 4800 Magnolia Ave. Participants bring their old equipment and leave with new electric replacements. Visit agza.net/exchanges or call (818) 400-2971.
