Downtown Farmers Market Moves to New Main Street Location This Saturday

The weekly market relocates four blocks south to a larger space with more free parking, beginning March 7 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Downtown Certified Farmers Market relocates to Main Street between 10th and 12th streets this weekend, leaving its home of 20+ years behind.

Why it matters: If you shop the Saturday market, head to the courthouse block — not the old spot near 5th and 6th — starting March 7. Hours stay the same: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Driving the news: Ward 1 Councilmember Phillip Falcone pushed the move to expand the market's footprint and activate a quieter stretch of downtown.

  • The courthouse grounds offer mature trees, gardens, and more free parking than the current location.

Yes, but: Four longtime market regulars opposed the change in a letter to city officials, saying they learned of the permanent relocation just one week before it takes effect.

  • They argued the current spot near the Mission Inn and Convention Center drives foot traffic and benefits nearby businesses.

What's next: Falcone says he'll monitor the new location over the coming weeks. If it isn't working after a year, he said, the city will revisit the decision.

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation Committee Moves to Lower Speed Limits Throughout the City

A new plan would reduce speed limits by five to ten miles per hour on more than 100 streets citywide, with a full city council vote expected in the coming weeks.

The city's Transportation Committee unanimously approved reducing speed limits by 5–10 mph on more than 100 Riverside streets, with a full council vote coming soon.

Why it matters: If you drive, walk, or bike in Riverside, lower speed limits on 135 streets could be coming to your neighborhood — backed by data showing speed directly drives fatal crash rates.

By the numbers: Riverside logged more than 3,000 speed-related collisions over the past five years, including 40 fatalities in 2022 alone.

  • At 20 mph, pedestrians have a 90% survival rate in a collision. At 40 mph, that drops to 20%.

Driving the news: The committee's vote Wednesday follows a study by RK Engineering, which surveyed 319 streets using radar data, traffic patterns, and five years of crash records.

  • Of those streets, 135 were flagged for speed limit reductions.

What's new: The committee amended the proposal to include a segment of Victoria Avenue from La Sierra to Tyler — a stretch with 49 new homes under construction — lowering its limit from 45 to 35 mph.

What's next: The proposal heads to City Council for a vote in the coming weeks. If approved, the city will notify residents via social media and its website, and coordinate with Riverside Police on enforcement — with a grace period before citations begin.
