Riverside Community Hospital will build an 11-story patient tower and parking garage as part of a $912 million expansion project designed to address the Inland Empire's hospital bed shortage and meet state seismic requirements.

The 459,496-square-foot tower will add 220 medical surgical beds and 54 intensive care beds to the hospital campus at 4445 Magnolia Ave. The expansion also includes new labor and delivery units, a pharmacy, radiology department and endoscopy suite.

"Our region is under bedded," said Peter Hemstead, chief executive officer of Riverside Community Hospital. "There are just 1.63 beds per every 1,000 people in the Inland Empire. This is well below the national average of approximately 2.35 beds per every 1,000 people."

The new building will help the hospital meet California's 2030 deadline for seismic upgrades that require medical facilities to remain operational after earthquakes. Three floors of the tower will remain unfinished shell space for future patient rooms and operating rooms.

The project represents the latest in a series of investments totaling $79 million at the HCA Healthcare affiliate since 2021. Recent improvements include a 20-bed emergency room expansion, a 35-bed neonatal intensive care unit expansion and renovations to four cardiac catheterization laboratories.

"This new patient tower represents a vital investment in the health and future of our community," said Ward 1 Councilmember Philip Falcone. "As the demand for quality care continues to grow, this expansion ensures that our residents will have access to the resources, specialists, and support they deserve, right here at home."

Hospital officials will host a public town hall meeting Monday, September 22, 2025 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Health Education Center near the hospital's main entrance. Free parking will be available in front of the center.

The expansion timeline and construction details were not announced.
