Small Escapes: Riverside's Micro Luxury Spots
From historic hotel lounges to palm-lined drives, the city offers accessible alternatives to expensive wellness retreats.
Each week, we will introduce a new neighbor. This is not a who's who list. These are regular Riversiders doing exceptional things.
Eliel, a longtime Riverside resident, is the owner of Knitters Hideout in Brockton Plaza. His shop has become more than just a place to buy yarn, it’s a welcoming space where anyone can drop in during the day to knit, crochet or simply connect. On Tuesday evenings, he also hosts Knit Nite from 5 to 8, creating an important “third space” for people of all ages to gather.
The shop feels a lot like a moai, a circle of community and support, similar to those celebrated in the Blue Zones Project Riverside. Eliel himself describes his role simply: “I’m just a small business owner trying to bring a sense of community and be part of what makes Riverside special.” Easygoing, fun, and deeply welcoming, Eliel has built a gem of a neighborhood spot that brings people together through creativity and care.
What does Riverside mean to you? It’s the place I call home. I love the diversity of its population and the amount of educational institutions all over the city. Because of that, there’s so much youth and so many highly educated minds. This city has an endless amount of energy that makes you have faith in the future. Let’s not forget the amazing architecture around. It’s a love story in the making :)
What is your Mt. Rubidoux summit count (estimated)? The rocks know me by name. Ha! Ha!
What is the most beautiful building in Riverside? I must say the Riverside County Courthouse building is just amazing.
What is your favorite Riverside small business? I have a soft spot for Kramer’s Koffee Bistro :)
What is your go-to sandwich in town? Backstreet! But there are so many good ones. One for every day of the week :)
What is your idea of a perfect weekend day in Riverside? I would say an early walk to Mt. Rubidoux with some friends, then actually find a spot to knit and relax. After that, head downtown for some delicious food, there’s plenty near the Mission Inn, and explore the fun stores in the area. I always end up buying cool stuff I don’t need but that calls out to me. Ha! Ha!
Weekends are made to recharge and relax.
What is your favorite spot for a date night? I must say the Mission Inn and its surroundings.
Do you call it the Galleria or Tyler Mall? I finally call it the Galleria, but it did take a few years.
If you could put one message on a billboard on the 91, what would it be? Come in! In Riverside we love everyone!
Finally, tell us what you’re working on right now and how our readers can support your efforts—whether it’s a project, passion, or cause close to your heart! I’m trying to get people excited about fiber arts as a way to keep it alive for new generations, and to provide a place where people can connect with others and be creative.
