A mackerel sky of rippled, patchy clouds stretches overhead as the Peace Tower and Friendship Bridge overlook the city below from Mt. Rubidoux. **Monday Gazette: September 28, 2026**

**Hello Riverside, and Happy Monday!** If you had 'Gage Canal' typed before you caught yourself, you weren't alone. Good instinct — and it turns out the two really are tangled up, just not the way you'd guess.

The answer is the **Tequesquite Arroyo**, a natural stream running from the eastern side of the city down toward the Santa Ana River. The golf course in our clue is the **Victoria Club**, incorporated in 1903, which sits right inside the arroyo. Follow the water downstream and you reach **Ryan Bonaminio Park**, named for the young Riverside police officer killed in the line of duty in 2010.

As for the Gage Canal: it doesn't run through this stretch — but between 1885 and 1889, Matthew Gage's canal company had to cross this very arroyo, building an elevated flume near where Andulka Park sits today to carry irrigation water clean over it. A few years later, Gage's own Victoria Bridge (1891) crossed the same arroyo again, this time to link the new Arlington Heights neighborhood to downtown. So the canal and the arroyo really have crossed paths, twice — just never merged into one.

Thanks for playing along!

## Focus on Fire

What Riverside residents should know about wildfires and fire prevention.

Southern California is just about synonymous with wildfire. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of acres have burned in our region over the decades. Drought and climate extremes driven by human-induced climate change have dramatically escalated the risk of fire.

Fortunately, there are things residents can do to reduce the threat from potential blazes and comply with state fire-prevention measures.

Wildfires are a natural process in the Southern California landscape, as in many other locales. Low, fast-moving brush fires clear understory vegetation, that is, the layer of plants growing at the lowest level of a wooded area that can include moss, ferns and shrubs. When this happens, new trees can sprout and grow. In fact, some tree species in the region, such as Monterey and knobcone pines, require heat from a fire for their cones to open. This adaptation is called "[serotiny](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serotiny?ref=raincrossgazette.com)."
