UCR's [$3.5 million NIH grant](https://news.ucr.edu/articles/2026/09/16/breathing-new-life-respiratory-care?ref=raincrossgazette.com) will fund biomedical researcher Erica Heinrich's five-year effort to build a machine-learning tool detecting shortness of breath in ICU and COPD patients unable to communicate it.
