# March Field Air Museum to Mark 9/11's 25th Anniversary With Bell-Tolling Ceremony

March Field Air Museum will hold a public remembrance ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, in the museum's Heritage Garden.

The event brings together dignitaries, veterans and first responders for a morning of remarks, music and silence, offering Riverside residents a chance to reflect on an attack that killed nearly 3,000 people and reshaped American life.

A Joint Honor Guard made up of members from Cal Fire (the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection), the City of Riverside and the City of Corona will present the colors to open the ceremony. Melanie Pedro will sing the national anthem, and the museum's Preservation Board will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Bells will toll seven times during the program, each marking a specific moment from the day's timeline: American Airlines Flight 11 striking the World Trade Center's North Tower at 8:46 a.m.; United Airlines Flight 175 striking the South Tower at 9:03 a.m.; American Airlines Flight 77 hitting the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m.; the South Tower's collapse at 9:59 a.m.; United Airlines Flight 93 crashing near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 10:03 a.m.; and the North Tower's collapse at 10:28 a.m. A seventh and final toll will honor first responders and community members who have died from illnesses linked to the 2001 attacks.

Speakers include March Field Museum Foundation President Jamil Dada; March Air Reserve Base Commander Col. Doug Jeffrey; retired Cal Fire unit chief and Riverside County Fire Chief Bill Weiser; and retired U.S. Air Force Col. Wayne Scott, who will deliver a military and veteran tribute. Chaplain Lt. Col. David Sarmiento, deputy wing chaplain for the California Air National Guard, will give the invocation and read Billy Collins' poem "The Names." Museum curator Keegan Chetwynd will offer a reflection on the 25 years since the attacks.

The ceremony concludes with a memorial wreath-laying and Missing Man Ceremony, a national moment of remembrance, and the retiring of the colors.

Following the ceremony, Scott will give a separate presentation, "Enemy Within the Gates," from 11 a.m. to noon in the museum's Hangar 2 Conference Room. That program requires paid museum admission. Scott served nearly three decades in the Air Force as a communications and information officer, including three tours as a squadron commander, before retiring as a colonel in 2005.

The remembrance ceremony in the Heritage Garden is free and open to the public; museum admission is required to enter the grounds and galleries.
