(Ken Crawford) If only the weather knew I had already flipped the switch in my brain from Summer to Fall. September is an odd month—a month on the verge. Those who want to ride the Summer for all it’s got find themselves at odds with the people making room for pumpkin spice everything. I’ll take the heat for a few more weeks. I like the tension. I like watching September battle with August and October. September isn’t looking for romance. September is looking for a fight. CBU has a reputation for scheduling challenging non-conference matches, and the December 11 trip to San Diego to play SDSU may be one of the toughest games in Lancer Basketball history. The Aztecs are perennial NCAA Tournament attendees and were second-place finishers in 2023\. Lancers travel well, and I’m sure plenty of CBU fans will make the drive to SDSU. (Ken Crawford) UC Riverside may be the best option for those looking for a public university that offers a high return on investment. According to Forbes magazine, UC Riverside is ranked as the 37th best public university in the US for 2024-25. The ranking is based on data from the Federal Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System and the College Scorecard, which tracks graduates' salaries. The public policy think tank Third Way and various Forbes lists were also considered when calculating the rankings. After years of absence the pedal boats are back at Fairmount Park. (Ken Crawford) There is something special about the return of things that we love. We watch things fade and go away, and often, if they are replaced, it’s by something new or “better.” The Pedal Boats at Fairmount Park are back, and it’s a big deal. In this case, they are coming back, largely as we remember. That means a new generation will experience a side-by-side voyage with a girl or boyfriend around the lake. It means a toddler “helping” dad with the leg work of piloting a pedal boat around the lake. It means a Coke and a candy bar on the shore while you wait for your turn and a horn on the half hour telling you to bring it back into the dock. (Courtesy of Riverside Parks and Recreation) The Villegas Park Boxing Club will hold its annual showcase at the Fairmount Park Armory this Friday, September 7\. This venue move is a significant upgrade for spectators and highlights an opportunity for what might become an important venue for boxing and other sporting events in Riverside. The 65-year-old National Guard Armory at Fairmount Park is getting a makeover. While the Armory and its offices haven't been used by the National Guard for some time, it's now part of a renewal effort backed by $2.5 million in federal funds. The project is part of Riverside's "Put the River Back in Riverside" campaign, led by Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson, aiming to turn the Armory into an arts and recreation center within Fairmount Park.
