(Ken Crawford) **Friday Gazette: September 13, 2024** Justin reminded me that I have been with The Gazette for six months. It’s been an amazing experience and truly a dream. Early in the process of my getting hired, we talked about the mission of The Raincross Gazette being love. I can truly say that working with Justin and Amy is working in an environment of joy. The fervor they bring to seeking out and documenting local excellence and beauty is truly moving and makes what I do so fulfilling. I’ve been around long enough that some of you have started to recognize me “in the wild,” and the words of encouragement have been incredible. Thank you for supporting us. These events provide affordable, family-friendly entertainment and foster civic pride and community connections. See you in the bleachers. ### Poly Football Home Opener: Return To Wheelock Poly High School Bears will host its rivals, the Martin Luther King Wolves, for the home opener at its new home stadium, Wheelock Field. This won't be the Bears' first football game at RCC. Wheelock Field was originally built as part of Poly High School in 1921 before the school relocated to its current location at Victoria and Central. Poly used Wheelock as its home field until the 1960s and has played there sporadically since. This season, Poly will play all of its home games at RCC. ML King is the newest school in town, but the Wolves vs. Bears rivalry is strong. Wheelock oozes history and is a great place to catch a game. It should be cool enough to wear your Varsity Jacket on Friday night. (Ken Crawford) The City of Riverside Parks Department hosted a meeting in the Mayor's Ceremonial Room on Tuesday to begin creating a plan for recreational development along the city's points of interface with the Santa Ana River. How do we honor the river's significant role in the Indigenous communities' history and culture while increasing Riverside residents' access to the river? Parks officials, historians, museum curators, and media members joined representatives of local Indigenous communities to discuss what needs to be considered in planning spaces usable for recreation and respect the cultures that hold the river and its banks as sacred. The Riverside City Council approved a controversial 25-unit luxury housing development on September 10 that has been in limbo for nearly 20 years. The project will rezone 14.96 acres, many of which burned during the [recent Hawarden Hills Fire](https://www.raincrossgazette.com/hawarden-hills-fire-damages-houses-and-displaces-residents/), from public facilities to residential conservation, despite concerns from some residents about environmental impact and trail placement. Council member Conder, who represents the area, moved to approve the project. "We need places for people to live," Conder said, adding that the development would help reduce fire danger. "Putting houses in there and having the proper fire breaks will help protect the other homes in the area."
