# Earth Day activities set sights on ecology and the environment

Earth Day began on April 22, 1970\. Set aside as a day of education and action, thousands of organized events worldwide focus on environmental issues and solutions. Riverside celebrates Earth Day 2024 with the annual [Insect Fair](https://riversideca.gov/insectfair?ref=raincrossgazette.com) in the breezeway at the Main Library. The Insect exhibits and bug-centered activities attract thousands of people every year. Bugs are a creepy, fun way to introduce kids to ecology and help to demystify the *yucky* creatures by focusing on the essential functions they serve in the ecosystem.

The [Wild and Scenic Film Festival](https://wildandscenicfilmfestival.org/events/riversidecc-23-2/?ref=raincrossgazette.com) will stop at RCC on Friday, April 19, during Earth Day weekend. Ten films from around the world focusing on Nature and ecology will be screening at the Digital Library Theater. Earth Day is also great for using your Riverside Public Utilities voucher for a free shade tree. Due to the Asian Citrus Psyllid, citrus trees are not available for purchase, but there are plenty of other options. The voucher was included in your March billing statement.
