Welcome back, neighbors! [Last week](https://www.raincrossgazette.com/a-glass-act/) we took several minutes creatively contemplating the big questions around all that’s bottled up around us. Did you send a message into the world that may not be read for generations? Perhaps you crafted something that shows its best side from the inside of a glass bottle. Regardless of your material achievement, imagine a raised glass to celebrate any cerebral asides you took for yourself.

This week, open the utensil drawer and listen for our next creative nudge clinking around the cutlery drawer: the butter knife.

As the resident cook and dishwasher in my house, I have learned that butter knives need extra care. Mine emerge from the dishwasher clean enough for most reasonable people, but rarely sparkling and spotless. I am apparently not most reasonable people. If I want them cleaned to my standard, I must wash them by hand.

This is a tactile reminder that machines are very good at many things, and the list of those things grows every day. Dishwashers wash dishes. Chatbots help write creative nonfiction. Both allegedly save me time; both regularly leave behind something that requires another look.

The butter knife itself offers a gentler version of the technological innovations shaping the world today. I like the implied safety of putting “butter” before “knife.” Knives are dangerous. But no action hero has ever reached dramatically for the butter knife to avert disaster. Perhaps you will be the creative genius to write that blockbuster, and pitch Brandon’s Diner to sign on as executive producer.

This activity works great while you wait at a restaurant or to procrastinate before emptying the dishwasher. Enjoy the time in between with one or more of these creative distractions:

1. Butter Prefix: Place “butter” in front of five words that could use softening: butter deadline, butter argument, butter traffic. Choose one and write its dictionary definition. What happens when you bring a butter knife to a knife fight?
2. Edible Canvas: Spread butter, jam or another edible treat across toast using three different motions. Make ridges, circles, meandering doodles, or a small portrait of someone with striking features. Name the artistic period you have just founded, then eat all the proof of your accomplishment.
3. Cutup Lineup: Close your eyes while someone opens the utensil drawer or record the sound and replay it later. Can you distinguish the butter knives from the other utensils? Describe the clinking without naming metal or silverware. Imagine yourself playing the role of Columbo in a very small mystery.
4. Equivalency: Place a dishwasher-cleaned butter knife beside one you polished by hand. Turn them under a light and study the differences. Write a short, snappy dialogue between the two. Perhaps the AI event horizon will more closely resemble *The Odd Couple* than *Terminator*. Machines and humans must continue sharing the kitchen no matter what’s cooking.

For an object with such a soft-sounding name, the butter knife lives a surprisingly rugged second life. It pries open lids, loosens stubborn screws and scrapes mysterious gunk off the countertop before returning to its mild-mannered persona in the utensil drawer. Perhaps creativity also depends on refusing the limits of our official job descriptions. This week, consider what you do well that no one would guess from your name—or where you happen to be stored.
